EXP:3 - News Article Mashup

Popularity begets influence and influence begets popularity.

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, looks likely to receive a drubbing at the ballot box today, in her first electoral test since her conservatives formed a coalition government with the liberals last autumn.

Her no-nonsense, laissez-faire approach to problem-solving earned the East German physicist and pastor's daughter many plaudits when she came to power in 2005, but she has now seen her popularity slump in the space of three months from 70% to 48%. On Friday she was slammed over the news that she is to receive an annual pay increase, which the tabloid Bild said was "completely inappropriate" at a time of crisis.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr has spoken about her heartbreak at losing a loved one in a car accident and how it taught her to cherish life.

Joining the daily telegraph's I promise road safety campaign as a celebrity ambassador, the 26-year-old said she loved the freedom of driving but understood all too well the responsibilities that came with it and the dangers it could bring.

Picture of Helen Keller as a child revealed after 120 years. Jan Seymour-Ford, a research librarian at Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts, which both Sullivan and Keller attended, said of the discovery, "It is a beautiful composition. It is not even the individual elements. It is the fact it has all of the components."

Black Box

Erika Kruger (Black Box)p32

This slide is showing what appear to be shadows cast onto an undulating landscape. They mould and conform themselves to the ground’s subtle corrugations, but the shadows also alter the landscape by creating negative spaces within its boundaries. Despite this the shadows still become a part of the new landscape that is created rather than becoming an idiosyncratic element that doesn’t belong.

This ties in with my own design which aims to create spaces separate but at the same time integral to the landscape in which they are situated, creating a new landscape rather than just destroying the first. In my design however, I cannot simply form my spaces to follow the contours of the land as unlike shadows they are not flat.

Electroliquid Aggregation

“In science it's really exciting when new technologies start getting to a state when you can actually use them.....Electricity can make such a difference to people's lives. They can read at night."
– Nicole Kuepper

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”
– Charles Darwin

ELECTROLIQUID AGRIGATION

“It is not the latest technologies, nor is it most advanced that becomes the most significant. It is those that can get to a state where they are actually useful.”

Buildings are devices used by people, much like any other technology. And like any other piece of technology their intrinsic value lies not in level of complexity or technical advancement but in their ability to fulfil a need, as expressed by Kuepper.

This links in with Darwin and his thoughts on the mechanisms of natural selection that the survival of any given organism lies in its ability to adapt. Technology including architecture is constructed for an initial purpose that in time may become obsolete; they then will face destruction unless they are judged to be able to meet another purpose in which they can be useful once more.
