Buildings are devices used by people, much like any other technology. And like any other piece of technology their intrinsic value lies not in level of complexity or technical advancement but in their ability to fulfil a need, as expressed by Kuepper.
This links in with Darwin and his thoughts on the mechanisms of natural selection that the survival of any given organism lies in its ability to adapt. Technology including architecture is constructed for an initial purpose that in time may become obsolete; they then will face destruction unless they are judged to be able to meet another purpose in which they can be useful once more.
